Movember
During Movember, men across the globe take up the challenge to grow and sport a new mustache. Aside from supporting sexy facial hair, the campaign takes aim at several issues facing men including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

The issues

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men in their early 20s to early 40s. Yet nearly 62% of those who are at risk don’t know how to check themselves. The good news is that it’s easy. The Movember global campaign aims to educate men on early detection by using the Nuts & Bolts self-testing method.

Worldwide, one man commits suicide every minute of every day—1,440 preventable suicides a day. Suicide disproportionately affects men as approximately 4 in 5 suicides are committed by men. It’s important for men to take action to be mentally well and to be supported by those around them. By 2030, the Movember Foundation aims to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25%.

More than 1.4 million men are diagnosed globally with prostate cancer each year.

Educating men about when to get tested is a major goal in battling the onset of prostate cancer. Generally, men at 50 should ask their doctor about a simple PSA blood test to potentially identify any issues. Black men and men with a family history of prostate cancer should start at 45. The difference between early and late detection can be life and death.

It’s important to remember that every man is a brother, son, father, partner, or friend. The Movember movement is proud to take these modern issues affecting the lives of our loved ones. What can you do to help the cause?

Getting the word out

The movement began in 2003 by the Movember Foundation. The foundation aims to raise attention and increase knowledge of health issues facing men today. These include both physical and mental issues ranging from prostate cancer to suicide.

To proudly show their support, Mo Bros (men who take part) around the world grow and champion their moustaches for 30 days. They’re also challenged to be physically active and participate in Movember events—while having a blast, of course! To increase awareness and participation, friends and family members are encouraged to take part in any way they can.

The financial resources collected during Movember campaigns go to support ground-breaking research in fighting these challenges. Programs and projects aimed at educating men as well as the wider public benefit from every contribution made towards the effort.

Take action and join the cause

The 5 rules

So, you want to be a Mo Bro and support the cause by growing a ‘tache? Here are the five main things you need to follow:

1. Once registered at movember.com, each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean-shaven face.
2. For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must Grow and groom a moustache.
3. Don’t fake it. No beards, no goatees, and no fake moustaches.
4. Use the power of the moustache to create conversation and raise funds for men’s health.
5. Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.

How to support?

Even if you can’t grow a moustache, there are countless fundraisers, events, marathons, and activities that aim to support men’s health.

Feel like a run? The Movember Foundation challenges people to run or walk 60kms in November. The number represents the men who are lost to suicide every hour across the world.

Another option includes hosting a Mo-ment where you get your friends and family together and do something fun and easy, either virtually or in person. Whatever you choose to do, the fundraising effort will go a long way in promoting and raising awareness of men’s health.
